Much has happened since I last posted. We traveled to Alaska for our 20th anniversary! It was glorious. We went by cruise ship. The first day at sea with 15 foot waves was not fun for Bob, but since I have chronic vertigo, the extra motion did not phase me. We arrived in Seattle a couple days early to give me some time to let my ears settle down. The ear pain on the flights was bad, but not the worst that I've experienced. Thanks to my time on the Inspire web site, I'm finding so many others who are dealing with ear issues after their Thyroid cancer diagnosis and surgeries/treatments. We also traveled by car to Austin, TX to spend time with our son who is interning there. His girlfriend and our daughter traveled with us. It was a fun trip with lots to do and see...especially the bats!

This is not my photo - but one I found online of a scene we saw twice while there. This massive community of bats leaves for their night time hunting of insects at dusk each day. What a site!
Well, now back to reality, the count down to see Dr. Chahal in Iowa City begins. I see her in two weeks and I really am looking forward to the appointment. My list of issues is long this time...and stem mostly around muscle cramping, muscle spasms and extreme muscle fatigue. I always think that things are connected to the thyroid cancer and over dosing of Synthroid. This time I'm wondering if my parathyroids are "pooping out." During surgery in 1996 my wonderful surgeon accidentally removed one of my four parathyroids. He found it in my thyroid tissue, cleaned it and minced it - re-installed the minced gland into the muscle wall of my neck where it should be working just fine. Each parathyroid is only the size of a grain of rice - but it does fantastic work - regulating the calcium levels in the body. We only need one good one to live well. They do suffer, however, from being in close proximity to the radiation given for treatment of thyroid cancer. When parathyroids don't work well, muscle cramping and muscle fatigue are par for the course. So, I'll get it checked out. I'll also see if my Vitamin D levels are dropping again (raising them with aggressive treatment took care of similar symptoms a few years ago) and if my magnesium levels are OK. So, there's always something to check on.
I'm pretty happy with my Synthroid dosage - sleeping is not too bad these days...so hopefully the neck exam goes well (just a manual one this time done by Dr. Chahal) and the blood work...but I won't find out about the blood work until after the appointment.
I'll update again after I see the doctor.
